“Design for a flag”

Silk screen printing and embroidery, 50x70 cm, 2017

Elias Mamaliogas embroiders the "Draft for Flag" (2017), a flag that actualy refers to another: the American Confederate Flag, a later symbol of racial hatred and division in the United States. Without ever seeing it, except as a reference on CNN News, we are instantly informed that the South Carolina governor –of Indian origin– puts up a bill to bring down this flag (something that happened in 2015) as a symbolic anti-racist gesture. With what appears to be mentioned below on the news feed regarding Jeb Bush, Mamaliogkas converts the information on the frozen screen into a flag-comment on the political events, but also on the contradictions that always accompany them.
